BI: IDENTIFY OVERVIEW

A key component of Bright Islands Complete Comprehension (CoCo) is the IDENTIFY module, which uses research-based tools to aid educators in recognising students' strengths and weaknesses in the foundational reading strategies.

  • The IDENTIFY module provides a comprehensive system using Pretests, Benchmarking and Post Tests that cover a wide range of genres to assess students’ progress over time, ensuring that all students have equal opportunities for success.

  • A variety of selected-response questions after the reading passage are used to evaluate students' understanding of the content, as well as their capability to comprehend and analyse literature of various genres.

  • Automated reports save teachers time and provide detailed performance analysis for individual students. These help teachers to quickly identify areas that need improvement, create personalised learning plans and monitor students’ progress over time.

  • Self-reflection forms provide students with an opportunity to reflect on their own reading performance, identify areas where they need improvement and set reading goals for themselves. Self-reflection forms can also provide valuable feedback that teachers can use to help them plan future instruction.

Benefits of Identify

WHY USE BI: IDENTIFY?

Easily pinpoint students' strengths and identify specific reading strategies to help them accelerate their learning.

With the IDENTIFY module, identifying the specific reading comprehension strategies that students struggle with has become effortless. It offers data-driven insights that can inform instructional decisions, helping teachers provide tailored support to each student. This information can be used in conjunction with the INSTRUCT module, allowing teachers to personalise their instruction based on each student’s unique requirements.

BENEFITS OF BI: IDENTIFY INCLUDE:

Pretests, Benchmarking and Post Tests across various genres to pinpoint students’ needs and assess their progress.

Student self-reflection activities that encourage students to reflect on their performance and set learning goals.

Automated marking and a comprehensive reporting system that reduce teacher workloads, allowing them to focus more on students’ skill and knowledge development.

A diverse range of genres and cross-curricular content in the assessments that help to measure and analyse students’ understanding, identifying their strengths and weaknesses.

Assistance for teachers in providing feedback on students’ strategy-specific responses, promoting better comprehension of reading strategy skills.

By utilising the IDENTIFY module, teachers can ensure that every student receives adequate support and attention, leaving no student behind.

1

Pretest

To assess students' proficiency in reading comprehension strategies and determine areas where they may require additional support, students will take five Pretests upon being assigned their Bright Islands reading level. It is recommended to administer one Pretest per day and complete all five assessments promptly.

After each Pretest, students can review their performance using the Achievement Chart and set learning goals. Once the five Pretests are completed, students will fill out Self-reflection 1 form, which will be sent to teachers via email to assist with planning.

2

Benchmarking

Throughout the year, students can be benchmarked with five Learning Checkpoints to identify those who may struggle with the reading strategies taught so far. These tests need not be taken consecutively and should only be administered when appropriate. After each Learning Checkpoint test, students can review their progress using their Achievement Chart.

3

Post Test

At the end of the year, after finishing all INSTRUCT lessons and the Final Review, five Post Tests will be conducted to evaluate students' mastery of the reading comprehension strategies. These tests should be administered one per day over a five-day period.

Upon completion of the Post Tests, students will engage in Self-reflection 2 form and review their Achievement Chart, where they can easily check their progress since the start of the program, recognise the strategies they excelled in, improved on during the Learning Checkpoints, and attained mastery in.

AN EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACH

Identify Research

BI: IDENTIFY RESEARCH

IDENTIFY is an assessment tool with which teachers can diagnose, monitor and assess their students' reading progress so that reading instruction can be tailored to meet the needs of each student.

Data-driven Instruction

STUDENT-CENTRED, DATA-DRIVEN INSTRUCTION

This is a highly beneficial instructional model that focuses on the individual needs of each student and provides tailored instruction to help them reach their goals. Teachers use data from assessments to identify areas of strength and weakness and to track progress.

The IDENTIFY module provides multiple sources of data to guide instruction through Pretests, Benchmarking, Post Tests and teacher evaluations. Multiple tests, as well as the analysis of the results, provide reliable information about the students' understanding of each strategy. This allows for more effective instruction and more personalised learning.

Pretests, Benchmarks and Post Tests

PRETESTS, BENCHMARKING AND POST TESTS

Data-driven instruction is an approach that uses student performance data from diagnostic, [benchmarking] and formative assessments to guide teaching and learning (Trimble, S., Gay, G., & Matthews, L. (2005). Dynamic assessment and data-driven decision-making in reading education. Journal of Educational and Psychological Consultation, 16(3), 217-244).

The IDENTIFY module in this program is designed to help teachers gather and analyse data needed to create effective and customised lesson plans using the INSTRUCT module. By using the data collected, teachers can tailor instruction to meet individual student needs and promote student success.

Developing Metacognitive Skills in Students

In this approach, students learn to set their own learning goals and evaluate their performance for accuracy and clarity. Through metacognition, they reflect on their own thinking processes, identify areas where they need improvement, and activate the strategies and skills needed to reach their milestones and ultimate goals.

BI: IDENTIFY RESEARCH

The Bright Islands CoCo program is founded on a set of fundamental reading strategies that provide a consistent underlying instructional framework across all program levels. These research-backed strategies offer a comprehensive approach to promoting student understanding of textual features and concepts, and offer a clear pathway to improving reading comprehension for all students. By using these strategies, both teachers and students can achieve a shared understanding of the reading process, leading to greater consistency and success in instruction and learning.

HERE'S WHAT PRINCIPALS, TEACHERS AND PARENTS ARE SHARING ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES

This differentiated program allows students to read texts which are at a level suitable for their current ability and leads to students being more engaged in reading lessons. As a result, they can experience success and improve their reading and comprehension abilities. Bright Islands Complete Comprehension is an important part of the English program and we are seeing fantastic improvement across all years in students' reading and comprehension abilities.

Linda Samardali
Head of Department from Kinross College

I've found Bright Islands Complete Comprehension has really helped in improving my children's reading skills. The skills were all clearly presented with a lot of samples and practice opportunities. The student report also gives the parents a clear guide as to which areas need reinforcement and which areas each child is strong in.

Shannon Zhao
Parent from Sydney

I have found Bright Islands Complete Comprehension very beneficial, especially during our time teaching and learning remotely. The ability to track live what the students are doing was helpful to ensure that they were remaining on task and to provide feedback.

Brent Ritchie
Teacher from Haileybury

Now that I understand how to use the online program and utilise the tools correctly, I am enjoying using Bright Islands Complete Comprehension. The ability to locate and download the different reports is phenomenal!

Amber Rains
Teacher from Kambala

I am a bit of a technophobe but using Bright Islands Complete Comprehension has certainly made life easier and the kids have found it easy to navigate.

Jo Oram
Teacher from Prescott College Southern

Bright Islands Complete Comprehension has become a very useful tool for my staff to implement effective teaching and learning programs. Having a tool that gives timely assessment results, meets students at their level of need and allows them to see exactly what students are working on in real-time is time effective and impacts on future goals.

The detailed assessment data generated by Bright Islands Complete Comprehension informs the specific direction of their reading and comprehension teaching. Students report they enjoy the tasks and feel a real sense of accomplishment as they work through the lessons and assessments at their own pace.
